Workshops: CHANNEL APPLIQUE
WORKSHOPS: Tahitian Applique  |   That Perfect Stitch  |   Channel Applique  |   Lorelei  |   Japanese Gingko

6 Hour Class
Skill Level: Intermediate
Class Size: 20-25 Students

Project: Wallhanging design - Jungle Glow or Mimi

Description: This is a very specialized type of reverse applique and has opened up a whole new world to appliquers! This technique has been used for hundreds of years by many different groups of people around the world but has never been given an official name. The Kuna Indians in Panama call their work "Mola" but this name is associated with the final product rather than an actual technique as is the "Pandau" work of Vietnam and Philippines. In Tahiti, the Tifaifai uses this technique to achieve added detail in their designs.

Roxanne McElroy brought this technique to the 1990's and coined the term Channel Applique. It can be used as a whole design or to add detail to another design. A very versatile and intriguing technique for seasoned needle-turn appliquers. Students will leave with their wallhangings well in progress and their needle-turn skills honed.

Three Hour Class
Skill level: Novice
Class Size: 20-25 Students

Project: Santa Clause, Nehe Nehe Vahine, or Ted E. Bayr

Description: This class is the same as the six hour class except that we work on a much smaller project. This decreases the amount of time required to transfer and baste the design. There is an option of doing a rose, teddy bear, cat, or Santa Clause pattern. Students will learn the technique but have less in-class practice time.
