Tifaifai Applique PatternsPATTERN INFO: Tifaifai Applique  |   Channel Applique  |   Other Applique Patterns The island paradise of Tahiti is alluring to quilters for its exotic, symmetrical designs that are pleasing to the eye and delightful to create. The Tifaifai (tee-fay-fay) technique has remained unchanged since the 1800's. A piece of fabric is folded in half, and in half again. The paper pattern is then placed over the folded fabric, pinned securely, and all four layers cut at the same time, using the lines on the paper pattern as a guide. The design is then unfolded like a paper snowflake and applied to a background fabric. The applique was done by hand traditionally, but some are now being done by machine.
Channel Applique PATTERN INFO: Tifaifai Applique  |   Channel Applique  |   Other Applique Patterns Channel Applique is the newest form of reverse applique. The lines in the pattern
are duplicated in the fabric by layering two fabrics, right sides up. The
top fabric is carefully cut right on the line of your channel design, which
creates two raw edges. Applique both of those raw edges with a 1/8"
seam allowance and you create a 'channel' that allows the bottom fabric to show
through the top. This system allows any line drawing to be added to a
quilt, including a signature!
