The Tifaifai Way
Length: 100 minutes

Since Tahiti is a French protectorate I open my lecture with a few sentences of the language just to set the mood! I always present the person who introduces me with a fabric flower lei and a kiss on both cheeks as is customary on the island when greeting someone. Part of my "set" is a hand-carved Tiki, a bottle of sand from our beach, and a Casse-Tete (Tahitian War Club) that is hand carved and of great interest.

I give a brief history of the migration and population of the South Pacific Islanders. History is easy for Tahiti... they had no written history until the arrival of Captain Cook in the 1700's so I don't have to bore the audience with a log of dates and figures.

I describe how the missionary wives taught quilting and how the Tahitian women altered the method to please themselves and ended up with the "Tifaifai".

I show around 30 Tifaifai's in various stages of completion. Several were my mother's that she made while living on the island, others she designed later and a few of my own designs are included. Each Tifaifai has it's own special meaning and story behind it that will delight and amaze the audience. Finally, I discuss the rules for designing one's own Tifaifai and encourage my listeners to do so.

I finish the lecture with a Q & A period and then allow anyone who wishes to come down to touch and examine any of the quilts. THEY LOVE THIS! The Tiki, Casse-Tete and Tapa cloth are also available for inspection. The lecture is about 100 minutes in length - usually more time is needed because people really want to talk and look. I stay until the very last person has had their fill and all their questions asked and wanders away contentedly. MY LECTURE IS PRESENTED WITH AN EMPHASIS ON CLOSE CONTACT, FUN and ENCOURAGEMENT!
