Workshops: TAHITIAN APPLIQUE
WORKSHOPS: Tahitian Applique | That Perfect Stitch | Channel Applique | Lorelei | Japanese Gingko
6 Hour ClassSkill Level: Novice Class Size: 20-25 Students Project: A 44" x 44"wallhanging styled from traditional Tifaifai from Tahiti (students have a choice of about 8 designs to choose from) Description: The Tifaifai is my singular passion. It exudes complexity when in reality, its simplicity is unrivaled in the applique world. Students leave the class with enthusiasm and confidence. The free-form applique method requires no pins, ironing, spray starch, or major preparation. Just grab your project and little supply bag and take it to the doctor's office waiting room with you! During the class students are treated to and entertained by accounts of my life growing up in French Polynesia and how the Tifaifai still holds a place in traditional rights of passage and the day to day lives of the islanders. The secrets of laying out the applique piece (which is cut while folded and then unfolded like a paper snowflake) onto the base fabric is shared and practiced. They experience and learn about grain lines, and warps and wefts of fabric weave. We then baste our applique designs with a unique water-soluble glue that cuts 'basting time' down to 1/3 of the time needed to sew baste. The glue system actually hold more firmly, making the system more effective as well as less time-consuming.
3 Hour ClassSkill Level: Novice Class Size: 20-25 students Project: 18" Square block with a simple design done in the traditional Tahitian fold and cut method. Description: This shorter version of the six hour class is perfect for students excited by the techniques but aren't sure they want to jump into the 'deep end'. My miniature block will allow for 'testing the waters'. Students will still learn the fold and cut system of Tifaifai making from Tahiti but in a much smaller project. The three hour class emphasizes needle-turn applique technique. Students leave with a much smaller project and less actual practice time. ©Roxanne International 2002. All rights reserved. |
